Meanwhile, increasingly, religious and irreligious Americans alike are viewing health as most central to what life is all about (as opposed to, say, duty, discipline, prosperity, and so on). Religious Americans are not walled off from the realms of fitness, exercise, diet, and psychology. Irreligious Americans sensibly take health to be a good goal in the absence of overwhelming spiritual concerns, although many varieties of nondogmatic spirituality comport well with a health centered view of life. And all Americans are increasingly skeptical that religion in the absence of good health care provides an adequate treatment for suffering.
